Too often, we labor over how far we have to go and forget to reflect and celebrate how far we’ve come. Today, I want you to take a moment and grasp the importance of reflection during your journey to determine what makes life work. Merriam Webster has various definitions of the word “reflect” but my favorite is simply “to think quietly and calmly.” When was the last time you did that?
Sometimes, we get so caught up in the day to day, the hustle and bustle of life that we forget to reflect and celebrate our progress. The path to your dream is exciting but it is also filled with thorns and you will get cut along the way. But, one of the most rewarding experiences is taking the time to think about how strong and determined you were as you navigated through those thorns and bore the pain of those cuts to your goal. That’s worth celebrating.
Unfortunately, what a lot of people find themselves doing is feeling sorry for themselves because they got a little cut along the way. Instead, you should be proud of that cut! Embrace it as a battle scar. There will be many more on the road to your dream. That is why reflection is so important. It allows you to take some time to envision your growth from the very beginning.
And, reflection does not necessarily have to involve the review of the most challenging things you’ve had to overcome. Your reflection may reveal the upwards plateau of you becoming a better you. It can also reveal the opposite. Your time of reflection may reveal to you that you’ve become stagnant and haven’t moved forward in your course, or that maybe you’ve even fallen backward. If this is the case with you, don’t be discouraged. If we don’t take the time to reflect on where we are in our journey, we can often find ourselves spinning our wheels and not even realize it. Also, when you take the time to reflect, I guarantee you that you will still find something to be proud of. Just because you are not where you want to be does not mean that you have not grown in some way. Perhaps you haven’t tangibly moved forward much in achieving your specific goals in the last 6 months to a year, but your self-image has soared because you have started to take the time to pour into yourself so that you can give back to others. Count that as a win! You’ve made progress toward making life work, and that is worth celebrating.
You’ll Know What Makes Life Work
Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re human, and everything is not going to turn out the way you envisioned. Just remember to stay steady and remember what you want and you will arrive at your destination. However, reflection on regular basis is key to your forward progress. As you’re reflecting be careful not to linger on anything negative or anything that you haven’t accomplished. The goal of reflection is to celebrate how far you’ve come and to learn from past mistakes and build on them. Falling into the trap of negative reflection will surely achieve the opposite results for you. So, take some time today and begin reflecting on the positive forward progress you’ve made toward achieving your dreams. I think you’ll be surprised to find how far you’ve already come in making you life work.
